The Johnstown Public Library first opened in 1957 as a branch of the Newark Public Library. It was originally located within a single room of the Town Hall at the Monroe Township House. In 1995, the Mary E. Babcock Foundation provided funding for the project to purchase land to construct a brand new, modern facility to accommodate the growth and demand of the Johnstown community. The new Mary E. Babcock Library opened in early 2006 with 4 times the floor space and 3 times more computers than before.
Additionally, the Mary E. Babcock Foundation provided funding to digitize past editions of the Johnstown Independent newspaper. Mary E. Babcock Library's archive of area newspapers ranging from 1884 to 1987. Search by keyword, year, or month for articles. Please note: no copies of the paper exist for 1899
