SANBORN FIRE INSURANCE MAPS
The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps were originally done to aid insurance underwriters in determining the degree of fire hazard with individual properties during the mid 1800's to the mid 1900's. They show construction materials of buildings, detailed city plans, use of the structure (church, factory, dwelling, etc.), lot lines, street names and widths, house numbers, and even sometimes the ethnicity of occupants.
Due to the wealth of information on the maps, they have come to be invaluable to researchers in many fields, such as genealogy, history, urban geography, architecture, and preservation.
The Sanborn Map Company published plans for about 12,000 cities and towns. They were transferred to the Library of Congress in 1967 and later published on microfilm by Chadwyck-Healey, Inc. They are arranged on the microfilm rolls by state, and then by city. The Newark Public Library owns only the roll that includes Newark, Ohio. On the same roll are the following Ohio towns: New Boston, New Bremen, New Carlisle, New Concord, New Holland, New Lexington, New Lisbon, New London, New Paris, New Philadelphia, and New Richmond.
The maps on the roll for Newark are for 1884, 1889, 1893, 1899, 1905, 1912 and 1920. In addition, the 1884, 1889 and 1893 maps include Granville, Ohio, a nearby town.
The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps may be seen online through OPLIN.
