CENSUS AND CENSUS INDEXES
The only census records the library has are for Licking County. They are on microfilm. We have two microfilm reader/printers. We have indexes, however, for all of Ohio for 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1880. Our index for 1870 is only for Licking County.
In addition, we have a book index called Early Ohio Census Records which covers Washington County in Ohio for 1800, 1803 and 1810. This would include what is now Licking County, because Licking was created from Fairfield in 1808. Fairfield came from parts of Ross and Washington in 1800 as part of the Northwest Territory. Washington was created in 1788. This book includes a good description of the early development of Ohio counties.
Another very good source for county development in Ohio is Ohio; Atlas of Historical County Boundaries, which is in our collection.
An alternate method of searching early names in Ohio is by taxpayer lists. We have the Fairfield County list for 1806 and 1810, and a Licking County list for 1826.
For a more complete collection of censuses, consult the Licking County Genealogical Society.
