Gettysburg had a population of 2,400 people in 1863; within a three day period that population jumped to approximately 150,000. The battle brought devastation to the residents of Gettysburg. Every farm field or garden was a graveyard. Churches, public buildings and even private homes were hospitals, filled with wounded soldiers.
